Small bathrooms, big calm: five ideas that work

Some of our favourite rooms are our smallest bathrooms. Here are five ideas we use again and again.
1. One colour, every surface
Plaster, tile or paint in a single soft colour on the walls, ceiling and even the bath panel. With no lines to stop the eye, the room feels bigger and calmer.

One material, no grout lines: tadelakt in Widcombe.
2. A deep bath, even if it’s short
A short, deep tub is more comfortable than a long, shallow one, and it fits where a standard bath won’t.
3. One niche for everything
A single recessed niche holds every bottle. Nothing on the edge of the bath, nothing on the windowsill.
4. Wall-hung everything
A wall-hung basin and toilet show more floor, which makes the room feel larger and makes cleaning easy.
5. A lamp, not just a ceiling light
A small wall light at basin height turns a bathroom from functional to restful. On a dimmer, ideally.
